A Journey Across Seas and Generations
The story of the Aeolian Islands is a story of journeys — of departures, hopes, and the enduring bond between a people and their homeland.
From the late 19th century to the mid-20th, thousands of Aeolians left their islands to seek a better life abroad.
They carried little more than their courage, their faith, and the traditions that would continue to define them across oceans and generations.
The First Departures
In the late 1800s, the Aeolian economy depended heavily on agriculture and the cultivation of grapes for Malvasia wine.
When the phylloxera epidemic struck Europe’s vineyards, it devastated the islands’ production and economy.
Many families — from Salina, Lipari, and the smaller islands — were forced to emigrate.
The first destinations were Australia, the United States, and South America, where work was available in mines, agriculture, and trade.
These early migrants often settled in small communities, recreating the warmth and solidarity of island life abroad.
Between Wars and New Departures
After the Second World War, new waves of migration began.
Economic hardship, limited opportunities, and the dream of a better future led many Aeolians to leave again — this time for Canada, Venezuela, and Argentina, as well as returning to Australia and the U.S.
Entire families reunited overseas, creating a living bridge between the islands and their new homes.
Today, these communities still celebrate their Aeolian identity through festivals, associations, and clubs — passing down stories, dialects, and recipes that keep the spirit of the islands alive.
Preserving Memory
To honor this collective heritage, the Aeolian Museum of Emigration was founded in Malfa, on the island of Salina.
Created by the Centro Internazionale di Ricerca per la Storia e la Cultura Eoliana (C.I.R.C.E.), the museum preserves the memory of those who left: letters, photographs, passenger lists, and everyday objects that tell intimate stories of courage and hope.
Visiting the museum is a journey through time — one that helps descendants understand not only where their ancestors went, but also why they left, and how deeply they remained connected to the Aeolian homeland.

The heritage of migration is not only history — it is identity.
Through Aeolian Roots, we seek to give voice to this living legacy:
to connect Aeolian descendants around the world, to celebrate their shared origins, and to offer new ways to experience the islands through culture, nature, and emotion.
